What is Sanctification?

  • Can you remember the definite beginning to sanctification that occurred when you became a Christian?

  • Did you sense a clear break from the ruling power and love of sin in your life?

  • Do you really believe that you are even now dead to the ruling power and love of sin in your life?

  • As you look back over the last few years of your Christian life what are some things that you used to delight in which no longer interest you? What are some things that you use to have no interest in that now hold great interest for you?

  • Sanctification is God’s will for us (1 Thessalonians 4:3). The word sanctification is related to the word saint; both words have to do with holiness. To “sanctify” something is to set it apart for special use; to “sanctify” a person is to make him holy.

    • Positionally holy - “set free from every sin” by the blood of Christ. [Justification]

    • Progressive or “experiential” sanctification - as it is sometimes called, is the effect of obedience to the Word of God in one’s life. It is the same as growing in the Lord (2 Peter 3:18) or spiritual maturity. God started the work of making us like Christ, and He is continuing it (Philippians 1:6).

    • Perfected or “ultimate” sanctification [glorification]

Lexicon :: Strong's G37 – hagiazō

  • to render or acknowledge, or to be venerable or hallow

  • to separate from profane things and dedicate to God

    • consecrate things to God

    • dedicate people to God

  • to purify

    • to cleanse externally

    • to purify by expiation: free from the guilt of sin

    • to purify internally by renewing of the soul

Lexicon :: Strong's G38 – hagiasmos

  • consecration, purification

  • the effect of consecration

    • sanctification of heart and life

Introductions

  • 1 Peter 1:1-2 “Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification[G38] of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.”

  • 1 Corinthians 1:2-3 “To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus[G37], called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

A Work of God [Through our Obedience]

  • 1 Corinthians 1:30-31 “And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification[G38] and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.””

    • The sanctification mentioned in this verse is a once-for-ever separation of believers unto God. It is a work God performs, an integral part of our salvation and our connection with Christ (Hebrews 10:10). Theologians sometimes refer to this state of holiness before God as “positional” sanctification; it is related to justification.

  • Acts 26:15-18 “And I said, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified[G37] by faith in me.’”

  • Romans 15:15-16 “But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified[G37] by the Holy Spirit.”

  • Hebrews 2:11 “For he who sanctifies[G37] and those who are sanctified[G37] all have one source.”

  • Hebrews 10:8-14 “When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. And by that will we have been sanctified[G37] through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified[G37].”

An ongoing Process

  • Acts 20:32 “And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified[G37].”

Holiness

  • 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 “Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification[G38]: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness[G38] and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness[G38]. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.”

  • 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified[G37], you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

    • “Washed” - Acts 22:16 “And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’”

  • 1 Timothy 4:4-5 “For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy[G37] by the word of God and prayer.”

  • 2 Timothy 2:21 “Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy[G37], useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.”

Involves good works

  • Romans 6:19:23 “I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification[G38]. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification[G38] and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

  • 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 “But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification[G38] by the Spirit and belief in the truth. To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

  • Hebrews 9:13-14 “For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify[G37] for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”

    • The preacher of Hebrews chose not to use the word sanctify for what Christ accomplished, but instead used a Levitical term meaning “pronouncement of cleanness”.

May involve Suffering

  • John 17:14-19 “I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify[G37] them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate[G37] myself, that they also may be sanctified[G37] in truth.”

  • Hebrews 13:11-13 “For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp.  So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify[G37] the people through his own blood.  Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured.”

    • The process of sanctification may include suffering and persecution.

    • 1 Peter 3:13-16 “Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled,  but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy[G37], always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.”

      • Did Christ need to “be made holy” here? No, He is already perfect and without blemish.

Additional references

  • Hebrews 12:14 “Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness[G38] without which no one will see the Lord.”

  • 1 Corinthians 7:14 “For the unbelieving husband is made holy[G37] because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy[G37] because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.”

    • “holy” – Not the same word. [G40]

  • Ephesians 5:25-27 “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify[G37] her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,  so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.”

Conclusion

  • Jesus set Himself apart for God’s purpose is both the basis and the condition of our being set apart (see John 10:36). We are sanctified and sent because Jesus was. Our Lord’s sanctification is the pattern of and power for our own. The sending and the sanctifying are inseparable. On this account we are called “saints” (hagioi in the Greek), or “sanctified ones.” Prior to salvation, our behavior bore witness to our standing in the world in separation from God, but now our behavior should bear witness to our standing before God in separation from the world. Little by little, every day, “those who are being sanctified” (Hebrews 10:14, ESV) are becoming more like Christ.

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 “Now may[G37] the God of peace himself sanctify[G37] you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.”

  • Revelation 22:10-13 “And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy[G37].” “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.””
